Popular culture as a whole has embraced many modern icons in present-day artwork: towering skyscrapers and industrialized landscapes. For this reason, many artists and seamstresses are seeking to distance themselves from the mainstream. Ironclad buildings and smoke-filled skies aren't exactly the most relaxing and enchanting of images to base a pattern on! On the other hand, fantasy cross stitch patterns tend to exemplify a more romanticized view on art – wide landscapes and mythical creatures – that appeals to a wider audience!

While many fantasy cross stitch patterns have their own unique color schemes, cool colors such as blue, green and purple are safe choices for base fabric. These shades give an impression of a calm atmosphere and leave a soothing impression on anybody who stops to admire the art work. As stated though, patterns may require different fabric colors to create the desired effect. The faerie to the left makes a nice example. Patterns centered around outlines and open space certainly fare well enough on their own; sometimes, however, more visual impact is desired. Mottled and multicolored fabrics help achieve this effect without sacrificing the quality of the pattern itself.

Dragons, on the other hand, pose even more of a challenge in pairing colors. In the world of fantasy cross stitch, patterns may present them in all manner of colors and styles. Simplistically designed dragons may look good in a complementary color scheme. This scheme should be used conservatively, however, as contrast begins to look jarring if the pattern involves too many fine details. Extremely detailed patterns oftentimes mandate an analogous color scheme: If the dragon itself uses primarily red and yellow, pick an orange or tangelo base fabric. Be sure enough contrast exists to avoid excessive detail blurring.

Some patterns showcase human involvement in a fantastical world, but most designers tend to avoid “modern” looking humans. The incorporation of mermaids and faeries exhibits some slight human representation, but allows enough foreign material to dominate the picture to create the “fiction” world that everybody is familiar with. Realistic people, when they manage to sneak into a pattern, are usually shown in overly ornate garbs and regalia. Carefully selected human subjects enhance the immersion greatly, but the brightly colored clothing they are usually presented in can pose problems for fabric selection. When this occurs, neutral colors such as beige or off-white make an excellent choice. Backstitching can help accentuate clothing edges to create a sharp and crisp look – a look sometimes needed when everything else may blend together.

Fantasy cross stitch patterns certainly pose a challenge in fabric and design selection, but they also serve as amazing show pieces. It doesn't take a highly elevated frame of mind to appreciate fantastical landscapes and elegant non-existent creatures. All it takes is a little youthful thinking and imagination.
